I have a chronic illness with lots of allergies, now including cats. My Dr says I should not have pets but we have a lovely cat, Clarence with health problems, which sometimes I find hard to cope with. My husband doesn’t want to part with him and neither do I but he gets sick a lot and I find it very stressful. I love Clarence dearly, but should we rehome him for the sake of my health?

My doc told me the same thing and I told him to go to hell. I will not give u an animal who will face certain death if I do.If you think coping with health roblems is hard, try coing with knowing your cat will die because you surrendered him.
Millions of people have the same problem, and they have managed. You can too.http://www.brandnamepetsupplies.com/store/reptileamphibian/lighting/index.htm "
maybe you can see if a family member take him for a while and test if there is an improvement in your allergies. I am tested for allergies had dogs all my life and I am fine.I am possitive in the test of dog allergies but I am allergic to dust and other things. I have 3 dogs and I am fine. There is also some medications than an allergist can give you or shots to inmunize you. Health is always first but you may get rid of the cat and something else could be causing yor allergies. Get the testing at an allergist and put the cat in a family member house for a week and check how much better your condition gets. It may be dust or seasonal allergies that have nothing to do with your cat.
Re-homing a cat with health problems is difficult, not many people are willing to give the time and money it can take to look after them. If you gave your cat to a shelter, the most likely thing (depending on the seriousness of his illness) is to be put down. But if you have a family member or friend that is willing to take him on, that is fine…
But you can’t get rid of him if your husband doesn’t want to, as it is his cat too. Maybe take allergy pills to help the allergies. And about the cats health problems, you should have realized that pets get ill, and not get an animal if your not willing to deal with it if it happens.
To me, it sounds like you are using your health problems as an excuse to get rid of your cat, as you do not want to keep on having to deal with his health problems. So just think about it before you make a proper decision…
If your doctor said you should re home him then maybe you should take notice, but If Clarence is an adult sick cat you are unlikely to re home him, why not try and get him better first if you can & then try and find him a good home. You could try and get him in the cats protection league why don’t you ring them and find out.
If you already have allergies, and have just now found that the cat is ONE of them, I’d assume you’re already taking meds for your othere allergies.
Would Clarence’s health problems make it hard to find a new home for him? You could be “sentencing” him to death, if you send him to a shelter ( in the hopes that he’d find a new home ).
If re-homing Clarence would stress you to the point of making you more ill……..don’t do it. Just take whatever meds you need, to be able to continue to have him. I know that I’d do anything to keep my animals……
If your husband doesn’t want to part with him, I hope he’s helping with Clarence’s care …feeding, cleaning his box, etc. It’s not fair for him to want to keep the cat, knowing that it’s hard on you, without volunteering to help!
I hope you figure out what the RIGHT thing to do is…….and Clarence doesn’t suffer for your decision. After all, when you adopted him, you PROMISED to love and care for him for LIFE ( his ), and it’s not his “fault” that he has health problems………or that you do, too……….
Good luck to ALL of you………
I agree with the person who said see if a family member of friend can take Clarence for a week and test to see how your allergies go.
I once had a beautiful dog, she was my whole world. The doctor told my mum she had parakinsons disease and it was too dangerous for a dog to be around the house because she could fall over it or the dog could jump on her, or somehow hurt her.
After many attempts to rehome her, (people came with interest, said they will think about it, and never came back), we had to surrender her to the animal welfare league.
A month or two later, it was found out my mum didn’t have parkinsons, but the symptoms were a side affect caused by the medication she was on. It was an easy fix, but I lost my best friend because of the situation.
How bad is your health? Is it sniffles and sneezing that happens or are you asthmatic and frequently use an inhaler? How long have you lived with the cat successfully?
Dr’s always seem to think the answer is to get rid of the pet-i know I worked for one for 20yrs.
Sometimes parting with the pet is more detrimental to your health than keeping him
IF YOU LOVE UR CAT ENOUGH AS U CANT LEAVE HIM BEHIND PLEASE KEEP HIM. THERE ARE SO MANY STRAY CATS AND CAT BEING PUT DOWN BECAUSE SO MANY PEOPLE CANT TAKE CARE OF THEM. PLEASE DO THE RITE THING AND KEEP THE LITTLE GUY (PS IM NOT SHOUTING I JUST LEFT CAPS LOCK ON)
We have a cat at my house and my brother is allergic. hes on medication. hes fine. ask your docter for medication. anyways i luv cats too
