Flea Bittin… What To Do When I Have Fleas From My Dog?

February 13th, 2010 § 20

My poor 13 month old Akita is covered in fleas and has been for quite a few days. We have tired everything to kill the buggers, but they are still around. Now I have bite marks all over my body that itch like crazy and I think I saw one of the black spots jumping around on my skin before I could squish it. What do I do? I must stop the itching before I lose my mind.

You need to have your house and yard treated because everytime your dog goes back outside it is going to keep picking them up. Then get you some good flea dip and get busy washing your dog.

The vet has this liquid stuff I cant remember the name of it. It’s about $20.00 a hit and they put it on the back of the animlas neck works AMAZING!!!!! I bought a cat once and she had fleas withen 24 hours GONE!
Now if the fleas are in your house hate to say it but you’re just going to be giving them back to the poor dog. You may have to have the house sprayed and if theres is carpet thats deff not good.
But once they’re under controll there is a pill u can give your dog once a month during flea season to prevent. The pill varys in price.Depends on the size of the dog. My Boxer is 70lbs and the pill is under $20.00 and if you cant afford to buy them all upfront some vets will let you buy them monthly.
    Good luck fleas SUCK
oh and something that may help your bites i always used diaper rash creams for any kinda irritations works amazing! helps get rid of redness too.

I had the same problem with my pet & I took it to the vet who have provided me some sort of medicine which should be applied on her before 24hours from bathing her.

Go either to a pet groomer or the vet to get your dog a flea bath. Ask them what would be best for follow-up flea care.

You are beyond home treatment. Get your dog on Frontline TODAY and call an exterminator. Vacuum and throw the bag out and replace the filter. Good luck…you are going to need it.

  • Jenn B says:

you need to get your dog some frontline-it kills fleas and their eggs on your dog, and it will take care of that problem. i am guessing you could try a flea and tick shampoo on yourself, but they will just keep jumping on you until you get your dog flea-free.

Treat the dog and your home. Fleas hide and breed in everything that has cloth. Wash all your washables in hot water. You may have to have a professional come get rid of them in your home. To prevent them from returning keep your grass cut as short as possible and mix a small amount of garlic powder in your dogs food-not full strength garlic and never just give it to them..always mix in it with food and always small amounts only. There are great recipes on line for homemade treats that have garlic in them you can try. They are easy to make and my 4 dogs love them. Make small batches and keep them in the freezer as they have no preservatives and do mold after a week or so.

As you did not mention a vet I will assume you did not take your dog to a vet. OTC flea products can harm your dog. OTC flea products are not effective. Take your dog to a vet to be treated. Also ask the vet what to use on your furniture, rugs, the dogs bed, anyplace the dog has been. Do not leave your dog untreated. Fleas are what causes heartworms.

There is really good over the counter flea meds you can buy…Frontline and Advantage are the best. As for your home, vacuum, vacuum, vacuum. Including everywhere your pet sleeps. Vacuuming sucks up all the eggs and larvae in your home. The eggs look like salt.

  • first to remove the fleas from your home. remove all bedding except your matress cover and any quilts or curtains or table cloths, pillows, seat cushions or rugs, and floor mats, that fleas can hide under or climb or jump up on. next buy alot of un-iodized salt enough to cover your carpets with it so that if you walked barefoot across the capeted floor it feels like sand under your feet from wall to wall , under furniture too in every room except the hardwood or vinyl, and tiled floors. you will notice the fleas trying to get away from the salt immediately, if you lay newspaper in the floor you can even hear them jumping on it but dont put anything down for them to get under or on. most likely you will find them moving towards your hardwood or vinyl and tiled floors to get away from the salt. The salt is ragged and sharp and damages their exoskeletons. leave the salt down for a day then it’s time to vacuum. start vacuuming in the hard floor rooms first, then vacuum the carpets thoroughly to remove all the salt. you will have to empty the vacuum several times or change the vacuum bag but be sure you do this outside so the fleas in the vacuum don’t jump back down on the floor. this will get most of the fleas but alot will have reached safety on furniture and the bed. to get the rest of them you must immediately after vacuuming place flea fogger cans in the center of each carpeted room of your house with all interior doors open and all surfaces uncovered and uncluttered. keep your dishes enclosed in your cabinets so the flea fogger will not accumulate on them. chevron makes a good flea fogger you can purchase these at a hardware stoore or walmart. leave the house immediately after you put the last fogger down. be sure you have turned off all ceiling fans and heaters/airconditioners/pilot lights especially the hotwater heater. stay gone for the day and while you are gone take your dog to the vet or groomer to be flea dipped and leave it at the vet or boarding over night while you finish with your house. when you return to the house open all windows for ventilation turn on all fans and airconditioning to help ventilate the house. vacuum once again all floors of the house, you will see the dead remaining fleas especially on the hardfloors and you will vacuum up any remaining salt you missed in the carpets along with more dead fleas. vacuum slowly, wipe off all surfaces such as counter tops and furniture. remove your mattress cover and wash it. your house should now be flea free, any remaining fleas will be dying soon and the unhatched eggs will be killed by the salt and flea fogger. next you must treat your yard before your dog returns and brings more fleas in from outside on his first visit to the yard. get a good insecticide for your yard at your hardware store or walmart, remember you get what you pay for so get the best you can afford and alot of it. get a broadcast spreader and cover your entire yard thoroughly with it. besure you check your clothes, pants legs and socks before you go back in your house afterwards, spraying your pantslegs from the knees down with an amonia window cleaner such as windex with amonia, will help remove any fleas and even prevent them from getting on your pants or socks if you spray them thoroughly before hand. once you have done this i would give it another day before bringing your dog home. also put a good flea repellant on your dog and keep it applied throughout the warm months until the first freeze. another precautionary measure to take to maintain your house from infestation again would be to purchase several of those flea traps that consist of a sticky paper bottom and a light at the top. you sit this in the floor and at night the warmth of the light attracts what few fleas may have rode your dog into the house that day and they are stuck to the paper under the light. they are effective but will not rid an established infestation.
this combination if followed in these steps will rid you of your pesky little guests and prevent them from coming right back. or you could spend a fortune with an exterminator and chances are they will be back.

FLEA BOMB YOUR HOUSE! It’s the only way to get rid of them. I had a problem with fleas a couple of years ago. A cat I adopted came home with them. We bathed her and bathed her (probably the only cat now that doesn’t mind bathes because of how many she’s gotten). They were still all over. Then the dogs got them and we got them. We had to bomb the house three times before we cleaned them out completely. Every spring, summer and fall now I’m always checking for them. Wearing white socks and rubbing my feet over the floor to see if any black spots start jumping. Nothing so far… knock on wood.
You can get the flea bombs at Petsmart… that’s where I got mine. Depending on how bad they are will depend on how many times you will have to bomb your house.
    Good Luck!

go to your vet and get some advantex, frontline, something from them. don’t get the store bought ones. they dont work as well.
get some borax, sprinkle it on the carpets or areas in the house, and let it sit a few minutes, and then vacuum as normal.
as for you, get some OFF, and spray it along your ankles and shins, these are the spots i always get bit at. oh and the back of your arms. strange place, but i get them there too.
we had this issue when our cats got fleas on them. not sure how we got them, but we did and finally after i was the meal for many weeks, we got frontline and borax…now we have no fleas.
    good luck to you.
PS. i heard eucalyptus helps. it’s suppose to keep them away. but i didnt see it working.

i know how miserable flea bites are!!! u really have to first, give all the pets in your home a good flea shampooing. from the tip of the nose,{not eyes} all the way to there whole body. than get them some where, where there are no fleas, and flea bomb your house, takes several hours!! get the kind that kills up to 3 or 6 mo. , air out the house before u or the animals stay in the house.. things should be alright after that. once gone, put the flea drops on animal. they last a mo. good luck.

Call your vet for the dog and call your doctor. Obviously you need to get ride of the fleas to. Good Luck

  • Bess2002 says:

Go to the vet and get Advantage for your dog, and for any other pets in your household. Use it once a month throughout flea season, and be sure to start using it next year before flea season starts (ask your vet when flea season begins in your area – it’s year-round where I live).
You don’t have to use bug bombs or fill your house with poison. You can remove the fleas by cleaning thoroughly. Vacuum your house thoroughly, and use the crevice tool of your vacuum to get the corners, baseboards, and furniture (vacuum under the couch cushions too). When you’re done vacuuming, remove the bag and seal it in a plastic bag, then throw it away outside. DON’T leave your vacuum bag in, or the fleas will crawl back out. Wash all of the human and pet bedding in the house.
You can treat your yard with beneficial nematodes that will destroy the flea larvae – check your local garden supply store.

They won’t live on you but will jump on you and bite. Try any cream for insect bites or put on some calamine lotion for the itching. Have you tried the flea stuff from the vet? Expensive but sooooo effective. Also, you need to get rid of them from the pets bedding and carpets, settee etc. Get a flea bomb for each room. You have to leave the house for a while then air the house for a while. But if you don’t do this they will continue to jump straight back on your dog.
