talk to your vet.. my cat had kidney problems and he put him on a prescription diet.. expensive but it saved his life

  • Hi
it is important that your cat drinks alot of water to keep his kidneys flush through so giving him some dry food will help to encourage this drinking.
there are also some brands of cat food that are designed to help with bladder issues. the link has one at the bottom of the page and mighgt be able to give you some more ideas about what the food should contain.

Hi, sorry to hear your cat has CRF – I know first hand how demoralising this illness can be, and know just how much you want to make your kittie feel better!
We lost a cat to CRF a couple of years ago, and she kind of sensed that some foods were better for her than others. We fed Skuz Hills K/D, bought from our vets. They do a wet and dry version, although Skuz preferred the dry version. Needless to say, especially with a cat with CRF, you must make sure that there is plenty of fresh clean water for your cat if you go for the dry option.
Speak to your vet re dietary requirements, you can home-make food yourself but this is very time consuming, and after all my hard work Skuz wouldn’t eat it LOL!
Nearer end-time, Skuz would eat nothing by Hills K/D, and I”m convinced that this is because she knew that this food was better for her than any other.
    Good luck

Hi, Make sure your cat is getting a lot of fluids. I would either give him/her, chicken, fish, anything that has not got any protein in it, have a look at the food in the supermarket for older cat’s, steer clear of Kitten food because this is loaded with protein. Good Luck.

My old cat had kidney failure, I used to feed him on the tins of lite food for the mature cat from the pet shop – chicken and rice flavour, definitely NO BISCUITS of any type. He reached the good old age of 19 (not bad for a cat)!!

I used the diet dry food, and this herb tea mixture used for urinary infections. My cat is great now.
I made tea and poured some into my cat’s drinking water. She drank it, even though she is fussy and I thought she wouldn’t. The tea doesn’t have a very distinct smell, so it was really good for her.
I made fresh tea – water combination every day.
This is the tea herb combination I used, so that you might find something similar:
    Uvae ursi folium 30%
    Ericae herba 20%
    Betulae folium 15%
    Ononidis radix 15%
    Equiseti herba 10%
    Madys stigmata10%

You need to talk to your vet. The diets for CRF (Chronic Renal Failure) cats is Hills K/D. I don’t remember if it is canned only, or if it comes in dry also. I do remember that the canned looks horrible and smells even worse. But it is specially formulated without sodium, high protein, and other things that can be hard on the kidneys. My experience was that many cats wouldn’t eat it. But try and see.
You will also have to start at some point, giving your cat Sub-Q fluids, (Subcutaneous fluids), at home to help keep the kidneys flushed. The vet will talk to you about that also. It involves using a needle and inserting it in the cat’s skin on th back and giving fluids. The fluids disperse over many hours and flush the cells and pull the toxins out of the body that build up from poorly functioning kidneys.
This procedure will be VERY scary at first for you. Most people have a hard time poking their pets with a needle. But with the right teacher, and lots of patience, you will get the hang of it. I used to teach many of my clients to give SQ fluids. I took as long as it took to teach them. Many times I had practice Dr’s. looking for me, thinking I was hiding somewhere, but when they found out what I was doing, they were more than happy, because the client would probably not have to come back for more lessons, or to have us administer the fluids.
A technician should teach you how to give the fluids and how to insert the needle. If the tech goes too fast, or is not patient with you, ASK for another tech. If they won’t accommodate you, it’s time to find another vet. Remember, you are the advocate for your pet. If you don’t get adequate answers to your questions, or feel that you are not getting the best service from your vet and staff, you have every right to take your PET and MONEY elsewhere.
