I Have My Dog On Frontline Plus But She Still Has Fleas Crawling All Over Her. What Do I Do?

November 29th, 2009 § 16

I first noticed fleas on my dog about a month ago. I bought a topical treatment (Zodiac) which I applied 24 hours after bathing the dog with flea shampoo and a house hold spray and treated the entire house. 3 days later she was crawling with fleas again. I took her to the vet and put her on Frontline, shaved her bare and sprayed the house again, and now again, 3 days later fleas are crawling all over her. She goes out only 2x a day for a short while to use the potty. What do i do? Every one says Frontline Plus works so well, but it hasn’t done a thing for my poor dog. Help!!!

We use a product called Revolution on our dog and he hasn’t had a flea on him since day one. We do alot of outdoor activities with our dog , he has had some ticks on him after a day of being outdoors and they won’t / can’t feed off him because of this medication. We love it . It may be something to look into for your dog.
    Good Luck!:)

Frontline and Advantage will kill a flea when the flea bites the animal..so yes there can still be fleas crawling on her until they bite her.
Another thing you might want to think about is changing her food. Fleas tend to infest animals with compromised immune systems. This means your animal isnt sick.. it just needs a stronger immune system to fight off parasites like fleas. Get on a good wholesome food with no byproducts or fillers..read the label..maybe you should check into a multivitamin as well to boost the immune system. I know you will see a difference. I lived in a flea infested house ( my roommate thought so because her dog and cat and her brothers dog always got fleas..) but my dog and cat never did because I wasn’t feeding them crap from costco or petsmart. Trust me.. it really makes a difference.
As for right now…you should get a good flea comb and also comb your dog as much as possible. Did you bathe your dog and then put the frontline on immediately? The thing is those products only work when there is oil on the hair folicle..so you need to bath and wait three days or put it on and then wait three days to bathe…

Get a flea dip and thoroughly soak the dog in it. Repeat this a few times (read the directions).
Even if you kill all the fleas, there are still eggs that will hatch and make more fleas. Unless you get all the new fleas before they can lay eggs, this cycle will go on.
Also give your dog some Brewer’s Yeast and Garlic chewables. Fleas hate the smell of that stuff, and it’s good for your dog’s coat.

I don’t know how long you have been using frontline…I used it successfully for years and then one day, it no longer worked…my vet said that they may have grown immune to it…so I switched to a different type of topspot flea prevention, but I wouldn’t use it too soon after using frontline. Give it two weeks at least or ask the vet.
Also…there are flea prevention pills you can try…ask the vet.

Had the same problem. I got some garlic tabs for pets and crushed them up in my dogs food and that helped alot. Problem is that the fleas have laid eggs in the furniture, under the beds, and carpets. So, they keep popping up. Frontlines kills what’s on the dog, but you see new ones popping on. It can’t keep up. Here’s what I did. I took all my pets out of the house, put off the flea bombs that you can buy at the vets, and visited my mom for the weekend. I gave the pets flea baths too. Then, when I got home, I vaccuumed the house VERY well, (don’t forget to wipe down your counters) and opened the windows and turned on the fan all before I let the pets back in. (Oh, don’t forget to wash your bedding or the dogs blanket after too–anything that the dog generally lays on.) That all did the job. There’s also a powder that you can sprinkle in your yard to help control them, but I haven’t tried that. Hopefully all this works for you. Careful with those flea bombs though–make sure to really read the directions. Good luck!

well i had that problem with my cat when i got her because she was an outdoor cat then and i tried the fronline and everything so i called my vet and they had a pill i could give her and it 30 minutes to work it killed the fleas and flea eggs. so ask your vet about it but continue to use the drontline plus as well depending on how big your dog is u might need 2 packs

This won’t smell too good, but try getting some garlic gel tabs and opening about five of them and rubbing it all over your dog. Hey, it’s good enough for my mom.

If it is a big problem you may want to consult a vet, they can give an injection. The injection kills off the fleas when they bite. It’s a good starting point because then you can give the bath to get rid of the live ones and the injection will get the others when they hatch and feed.
I do this and it is much more conveniant.

Fleas are a major pest. There are various species of fleas – cat fleas, dog fleas, rat fleas and rabbit fleas.
You can get rid of them by the safest and cheapest methods like boric acid.

I’ve had good luck with Frontline Plus but if it’s not working for you, try Advantage or Advantix. They’re good too. Did you shave her right after you applied the Frontline Plus? Perhaps you should have shaved first. You may have shaved the Frontline Plus off with the hair.

  • Trish B says:

Our vet told us Frontline does not kill fleas. What it does is when the flea bites the dog with the frontline in its system it stops the eggs from hatching which in turn stops the actual reproduction of the fleas. We used to live on a creek and had fleas really bad. We would bathe the dog with regulay baby shampoo (no shampoo kills fleas, the water drowns them) then let them dry. Next we would apply “rid” the lice shampoo and comb all the fleas out. That evening before bed we would apply the frontline to them as directed.

  • I AM says:

Dip your dog in a flea bath a few times as eggs will hatch later if not all killed, treat your yard with seven dust, it is used for roses it will kill the fleas in the yard , do this for a few days, don’t water the yard either, also don’t let your dog play in the yard for a few days, take him else where.

Fleas can be quite aggresive and sometimes tough to kill. You seem to have gotten many concerned pet loving Yahoo fans that really want to try and help with your problem. All of there remedies are worth a try in flea or tic treatment. I don’t believe any one of those remedies would do any harm. But I feel that your problem will continue. Here are the facts: Your pet continuely has fleas no matter what remedy that you use on your pet , treating your home repeatedly, and you say your pet only goes out for a short time to potty. If you know for a fact that your pet is not getting the fleas from inside your home, then it only stands to reason that your pet is picking them up from outside. Seriously treat the areas that your pet frequents to potty. If it is the whole back yard then you know what you have to do. You must treat the source. And by treating the source, your problem will go away.
